Augustus O. Hill

About

Augustus O. Hill, composer, arranger, and conductor, received a BS in mathematics from Wilberforce University and an MS in personnel counseling from Miami University (Ohio). His musical training includes a BM in composition and MM in composition and choral conducting from Wayne State University, graduate studies at Indiana University School of Music, and a PhD in composition and music theory from the University of Michigan. He studied composition with James Hartway, Harvey Sollberger, William Albright, Leslie Bassett, William Bolcom, and Evan Chambers; theory with Andrew Mead and James Dapogny; conducting with Jan Harrington, Dennis Tini and Brazeal Dennard; and organ with Marilyn Mason.

A former university counselor and administrator, Dr. Hill taught music theory and conducted the University Choral Union at Wayne State University, and served on the adjunct music faculty at Marygrove College. He is former artistic director of the Brazeal Dennard Chorale, as well as a pianist, organist and director in church and community music programs.

His vocal, choral, and instrumental compositions and arrangements include Resurrection, a gospel cantata; String Quartet No. 2; Psalm 91 for soloists, chorus and orchestra; Songs from Mizraim; Three Ways for cello and piano; Impressions for Carillon; Fix Me, Jesus for mixed chorus; Acclamation for Brass and Timpani; and Exegesis for tenor solo, chorus, and orchestra, which was performed at the 2008 Classical Roots concerts by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Brazeal Dennard Chorale. Renowned soprano Jessye Norman, cellist Anthony Elliott the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the African American Symposium 2000 Orchestra, the Flint Symphony Orchestra, the Grosse Pointe Symphony Orchestra, the University of Michigan Symphony Band, and a variety of additional soloists and prestigious instrumental and choral ensembles have performed Hill’s music.
